Magazine Cover Review

 Magazine Cover Review

My initial impressions on the magazines were that they were all different but alike in many ways. The cover images, the content pages, and the feature articles impacted the way I looked at each magazine. This is because each magazine had their own features that showed how they were trying to express themselves. Each magazine was targeting their own audience. You could easily tell the difference between which magazines would be targeting males and females. For example, Sports Illustrated and Mens Health are both targeting males and talking about different interests' males have. Each magazine had their own way of trying to intrigue their audiences.

Magazines have all sorts of ways to make the audience interested in their magazines. According to the article “Chances are you won't bother to read this article. It is just one long block of text, after all, unbroken by alluring pictures, snappy captions, or eye-grabbing infographics. You can't click it. You can't flip it. All you can do is read it. (Does Size Matter?)” the author demonstrates that the younger audience is less intrigued in long novels and would much rather watch movies or look at magazines that talk about today's news and drama going on in the world. But authors do not like the way that is making their audience decrease or losing their entire audience. Therefore, authors are trying to make their novels more interesting and grab the reader's attention. The author also talks about how people are only looking at magazines that have a flashy cover page and advice on picking up women. The magazine companies love the attention and people buying more and more of these magazines, but authors have not liked how people switched from reading books to reading flashy magazines.

Through the magazines we went through in class they were almost all similar. All the ones targeting males were flashy, bold red, black and white letters and really pop out at you. The magazines targeting females were calm, bright fall colors and were all female celebrities on the covers and within. For example, the magazine Cosmopolitan is targeted at females and it was all about makeup, fashion, and always has a female celebrity on the cover that is usually slim and very pretty. Vogue is also like this but higher end. All the advertisements within were very expensive companies and the cover page was very monotone. No bright colors, just black and white lettering and Rihanna's face. The entire magazine is this way too. All black and white. A magazine that is targeted at males is Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone is filled with red, black and white bold words The cover shows a male rapper and the words around him are talking about rioting and politics. Also, the magazine Men’s Journal is targeted towards men because they talk about different things in a man’s life and cars.
